The use of glass beads (0.8-1.2mm) in an eyepatch is a specific and functional medical application, most commonly associated with post-operative care following eyelid surgery.

Primary Use: Post-Surgical Ophthalmic Pressure Dressing
This type of device is specifically known as a “Post-Op Pressure Eyepatch” or “Ophthalmic Compression Patch.” It is not a standard pirate-style eyepatch.
Key Purpose and Function:
Controlled, Even Pressure: The primary goal is to apply gentle, uniform pressure over a closed eyelid.
Prevention of Hematoma and Edema: After surgeries like blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), ptosis repair, or other orbital procedures, there is a risk of bleeding and fluid buildup (hematoma/edema) under the skin.
The weight and malleability of the glass beads allow the patch to conform to the orbital contour, applying consistent pressure to minimize these risks.
Promotion of Healing: The pressure helps the skin and underlying tissues adhere properly to their new positions, reducing dead space where fluid can collect.
Cold/Heat Therapy Conduit: The glass beads have good thermal conductivity. Patients are often instructed to place a cold gel pack (for the first 24-48 hours to reduce swelling) or a warm compress (later to promote circulation) over the patch. The beads help distribute the temperature evenly.
Why 0.8-1.2mm Glass Beads ?
Size (0.8-1.2mm): This size range is ideal because the beads are:
Small enough to conform smoothly to the delicate curves of the eye socket and eyelid.
Large enough to provide substantial weight and density without being uncomfortable or feeling like fine sand.
They create a smooth, fluid-like surface that evenly distributes pressure.
Material (Glass):
Smooth and Rounded: Medical-grade glass beads are tumbled to be perfectly smooth, preventing any irritation or abrasion through the patch fabric.
Weighty and Dense: Provides effective pressure with a relatively thin profile.
Hypoallergenic and Inert: Glass is non-reactive and easy to sterilize.
Good Thermal Properties: Efficiently transfers cold or heat.
